Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
